How to Make a Seedling Pot from Newspaper

This is an easy and fun way to start growing your own plants. A small jar works well as a mold, but you can also use a small food can or a plastic peanut butter jar.

What You Will Need

  • One sheet of newspaper
  • A small jar, small food can, or plastic peanut butter jar
  • Tape
  • Potting soil
  • Your favorite seed or small plant

Directions

  1. A full sheet of newspaper laid flat and ready to foldPrepare the paper. Start with one sheet of newspaper laid flat.
  2. The top of the newspaper folded down approximately 6 inchesFold down the top. Fold one end of the newspaper down about 6 inches.
  3. The newspaper folded lengthwise into a long stripFold it lengthwise. Fold the newspaper lengthwise to make a long strip.
  4. Newspaper being wrapped around a jar with the folded edge at the jar openingWrap the container. Wrap the newspaper around the jar or can. Place the folded edge against the container’s opening.
  5. The loose newspaper folded over the bottom of the jar to form the base of the potForm the bottom. Fold the loose newspaper over the bottom of the container and secure it with tape.
  6. Remove the container. Turn the newspaper pot right side up and carefully slide out the jar or can.
  7. Finished newspaper pot filled with soil and a small seedlingPlant your seedling. Fill the pot with potting soil, then add your favorite seed or small plant.
